St Mawes Castle

St Mawes Castle, situated at the opposite headland as Pendennis Castle, both overlooking the Falmouth estuary to protect the country against seaward invaders. The general threat was from France and Spain, especially after King Henry VIII divorce Catherine of Aragon. St Mawes was as fortified and updated as St Pendennis, because although it was well situated to protect Falmouth from the sea, on its opposite side was high ground, making the castle vulnerable to attack from the land. Indeed it was only ever once invaded back in 1646, but was peaceably taken because the St Mawes governor realised that there was no point in defending from a land invasion so surrendered the castle without a battle taking place.
