The Minack Theatre is a delightful open air theatre on the cliffside with beautiful views out to the sea. This is a fantastic theatre where you can visit during the summer for some amazing theatrical shows. This is a truly sensational feature of Cornwall and great for whole family entertainment. It is understandable that many people imagine the theatre to be ruins of some Roman remains, but in fact this is quite a modern structure being the brainchild of Rowena Child who invested and began developing the theatre from 1931.
The Tempest was the first performance at the Minack Theatre which was held in 1932. Rowena Cade chose this location after finding difficulty in providing a suitable location with ample seating for such productions. A simple stage and some basic stone seating was erected for this show, however, with the many years since passed, the theatre has developed into the fantastic venue it is today.

Mevagissey Fishing Village
Mevagissey is a wonderful kept 14th century fishing village with beautifully restored cottages traditional stores throughout. It is fantastic place to visit during the summer days and evenings where you will find many wonderful and quaint specialist shops, art galleries and some very good restaurants for evening meals. It is also very close to some of Cornwall’s great tourist attractions including the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.
In Mevagissey, you’ll find many narrow alley ways and paths in and around the village, leading to some wonderful views and places to relax. There are also beaches in Mevagissey, if you just want to relax and catch a great tan, on a summer day.
On our visit, we spent most of the day in Mevagissey and would have stayed much longer, but for our ‘busy schedule’ and desire to visit the The Lost Gardens of Heligan. I would recommend a full day to get around all the wonderful galleries and quaint shops as well as spending some time on the beach.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan
The Lost Gardens of Heligan was exactly that, for over 70 years. These gardens were hidden by bramble, ivy and weeds, untouched since World War II. Once rediscovered in 1991, many secret paths, chambers, inscriptions and myths derived and then began the drive to restore these gardens which was held in ownership of the Tremayne family for over 400 years.
These gardens are now subject to International recognition for its restoration, which took over a year. There are hundreds of acres of land around the gardens which are ongoing in restoration. This is one of the best gardens to visit in Cornwall and we had a fantastic time exploring the many secret garden paths and of course enjoy the beautiful plants, flowers, bushes and trees. Many of the original plants have survived in these gardens.
Prior to the restoration there was a devastating hurricane which should have destroyed the gardens and the estate. I presume, because of 70 years of neglect and the overgrown ‘jungle’ that became the gardens, they were protected from such an inevitable destruction.

Loe Pool
Loe Pool was created when nature produced a bank from shingle which eventually created a dam separating the sea from the lake. Loe Pool is now a natural freshwater lake. Porthleven is the nearest village. Loe Pool is one of the most tranquil and unspoilt locations in Cornwall, it is a massive lake with some great beaches to visit, and nothing much else around.
The shore is approximately six miles, and there are plenty of beaches and points of interest as you walk around the lake. This is one of my favourite places in Cornwall and the peacefulness, solitary calm surrounding the place is very reassuring. Make sure you bring all some warm and waterproof clothing as it does cool off in the evening.

Looe Island
Looe Island is a very special island with a wonderful story about two sisters who wanted to own there own island. There are a couple of books written by the sisters which are quite fascinating. Babs and Evelyn Atkins dreamed of owning and island and back in 1965 they set about making this happen. I think one of the sisters was a teacher the other into pottery or arts of some sort. I remember reading that when they came across Looe Island, they felt they would not be able to afford such as place, but to there astonishment their offer was accepted. However, there was much work to do on the island, and if I remember correctly one of the sisters set up a pottery or arts class for visitors to the Island.
The sisters lived on the island nearly full time and during the summer months the place is a tranquil haven, however, in the winter the rough seas and weather make it nigh on impossible to get on or off the island.
Looe Island is 22 km and 150 feet above sea level, and is situated off Looe, by about one mile.

Lappa Valley Steam Railway
Lappa Valley Steam Railway, is a railway with steam trains running between Benny Halt and East Wheal Rose train stations. The train travels, as its name suggests, through the Lappa Valley. The railway was opened in 1849, so today the tracks are probably the oldest tracks in Cornwall. The original lines closed in 1963, and the Lappa Valley Railway was formed in 1974 to provide the wonderful tourist attraction we have today.
The track was changed to a minature guage track, which I presume means it was narrower than a regular track, but still capable of running a full size steam prototype (as opposed to running miniature trains). The guage is 15 inch, as opposed to a full size guage, nearly four times the size.
This is a fun day out and if you can catch a sunny day, you will enjoy the day even more. The sound of a steam train, coupled with the rumbling track and traditional steam odours make for a realistic experience.

The track was changed to a minature guage track, which I presume means it was narrower than a regular track, but still capable of running a full size steam prototype (as opposed to running miniature trains). The guage is 15 inch, as opposed to a full size guage, nearly four times the size.

Well, Land’s End has to be the most famous point in Cornwall. Renown for it’s most south westerly point in the UK, prompting thousands to visit this naturally beautiful coastline. The Hurlers
The Hurlers was formed from the Bronze Age dating back to 1500 BC. The formation of The Hurlers is basically three very large stone circles (like circle crops). There are many myths about these stone circles, but what is clear is that there may be some meaning behind the compass formation of these circles.
The circles are not all the same size and do not have the same number of stones making up each circle. The southern most circle is the smallest, the middle circle is the next largest and the northern most circle is the largest. The number of stones currently making up each circle ranges from 9 to 14 stones, however, when originally built they would have been more stones in each circle.
I’m not too clear on all the myths surrounding the stones, so it’s worth a visit to get your own view. However, it is said that the stones represented people being ‘turned’ to stone, because they played hurling on religious day, where it was forbidden. Eden Project
Arguably, The Eden Project is Cornwall’s most famous tourist attraction, receiving thousands of visitors every year. Reported to be the World’s largest greenhouse, with bio domes providing environments from a typical English garden to Mediterranean and tropical rainforest environments. On our visit we were awed by the immense size of the place and the sheer numbers visiting was astounding. There is much to walk through and you can really feel each climate as you pass through. You can imagine how quickly we had to pass through the tropical environment; it was so hot in this section. Make sure you carry water with you as you will certainly need a drop or two.

Godrevy Island
Virginia Woolf, it is claimed was inspired by Godrevy Island (as were many others), producing the novel ‘To the Lighthouse’. The island is host to a single solitary lighthouse which is the main reason for its popularity. The building of a lighthouse started around the late 1850s, because so many ships had been wrecked by this dangerous stretch of water. Eventually, a steam boat was destroyed by the island rocks and all on board had perished; this was the catalyst for the building of a lighthouse which took over a year to complete.
Eventually, due to lack of shipping activity the three man crew for managing the lighthouse was disbanded, and the lighthouse was automatically switched on and off as appropriate. It is still operational and standing approximately 85 high, is frequented via helicopter flight for routine and general maintenance.
Godrevy was made famous due to the lighthouse and of course the inspiration this brought to many, including Virginia Woolf.

Chysauster Ancient Village
Over 2000 years ago, there were habitants of Chysauster Ancient Village, which is situated not too far from Castle An Dinas. Chysauster is part of a settlement that is not too dissimilar to the structure of many of Cornwall’s villages today. Chun Quoit
Chun Quoit, on outskirts of Chun Downs, is a formation of rocks approximately three metres high, resembling a giant mushroom. This quoit is probably the best formed of all the quoits in Cornwall. The Cornish translation of Quoit is ‘the house on the downs’, and a quoit is essentially a chambered tomb.
A quoit is essentially Cornish for a megalithic structure. This is simply made up of large upright stones in a circular ring with a huge capstone, placed horizontally across the uprights. This formation creates the desired chamber effect.

Cheesewring
The Cheesewring, near Minions on southern edge of Bodmin Moor, is one of Cornwall’s most natural phenomenon’s. This is a stunning historical site as it is essentially a top heavy stack of rocks, forced by nature’s wind erosion, providing the illusion that justifies it’s name as the ‘Cheeswring’, due to each rock resembling a traditional cheesewring.
The oddity about this amazing site is that the largest and most unwieldy looking rocks are firmly situated at the top end of the stack and the smallest, lightest looking rocks are at the bottom, supporting the whole structure.
It is true to say that this 32 foot structure looks unstable at best, being situated on a side of a slope and seemingly held up by a few fragile looking small rocks. The first impression one gets, is that this structure could collapse at any moment; the stunning views from this point out to Cornwall and Devon are well worth the visit.

Cardinham Woods
Cardinham Woods, a fantastic woodland with many activities for all the family to enjoy. When we visited I was pleasantly surprised at how much we packed into the day, and how quickly the day passed through. The woodlands are a beautiful mixture of trees and shrubs, with some great clearances. This place is great for family strolls, but also plenty of cyclists, dog owners and horse riders visit the woods.
With over 250 acres of land, the woods are particularly ideal for horse riders. It is also a wildlife refuge for otters, deer and the high flying buzzards who constantly circle the treetops. The trails are well marked and lead you to amazing view points and explanations of the history of the Woods.
After a long days exploration, we visited the onsite Woods café for a drink and snack, before settling for an early evening BBQ in one of the picnic areas. BBQs are actually situated in the picnic areas, so just bring food and fuel to get started.

Bodmin Parish Church
This church was dedicated to St Petroc before the 1066 Norman Conquest. There now lays the chapel of St Mary, where the shrine of St Petroc is located.
In 1110, French canons visit to
‘Cornish Perpendicular’ pillars were typical of Cornish churches and Bodmin parish church, is one of the few churches that have building records intact and almost complete, surviving for centuries; records going back to 1491.

The parish church has an obscure history, too much history and detail to cover here. A visit to the church will reveal much of this. ‘Bodmin’ is a name that is believed to have derived from the Cornish language, meaning ‘house of monks’. Bodmin Moor
The mysterious Bodmin Moor is one of Cornwall’s treasure gems. A location where you will find many historical points, including Standing stones, bridges, cottages, burial chambers and farms built from boulders emanating from the Moors surface space over many centuries. The Moors is an ever deceiving landscape, giving the distinct impression that the area expands for hundreds of miles, when in fact it is a relatively small space by comparison.
When I visited Bodmin Moor, I got the distinct feeling of expansive, unspoilt and untouched natural beauty. I could have been transported many centuries back in time, and my eyes would have been beholden to the same natural beauty I saw on my recent visit. It’s not a place where one should be complacent, as many have lost themselves here; once the rolling fogs descend and the landscape takes a whole new shape and appearance.
You can get to Bodmin Moor quite easily, however, it is closer to the North Cornwall and West Devon borders. This is another good reason to find a cottage in Bodmin, which provides a springboard to exploration throughout the South West.

The Bodmin & Wenford Railway: A Lovely holiday trip near to your Cornwall cottage
You can’t do much better than get on one of the Bodmin and Wenford steam trains. What a fantastic and nostalgic activity, which was fun for all our kids. It was like going back in time and appreciating the travelling elite of yester year. Not only was the soothing sound of the track as the train rumbled along, a comfort, the carriage surroundings, odour and décor made this a train journey to be remembered.
We’ve been on the Santa by Steam and Murder Mystery Evening specials, which were both full of adventure, and I certainly would recommend a return visit. There is a buffet, bar and gift shop at Bodmin General, so plenty of opportunity to relax and buy gifts whilst you are waiting to alight.
I don’t know too much about the history, however, the railway was opened in 1887 eventually servicing Bodmin Road, Bodmin General, Bodmin North, Wadebridge and Wenford.

We’ve all been there. You hire a holiday cottage, arrive and are horribly disappointed at the dated decor, shabby interiors and lack of thought the owners have put into it. Not anymore. What is it about Cornwall that inspired me so?
As a child growing up, Cornwall was always a destination and location I heard about as a sunny, fun and beautiful location. Whenever a road trip was on the cards, the best option mentionable was a stay in Cornwall. I don’t know why so, but as an adult, it’s clear to me that much of the South West offers the same. However, the words Cornwall inspire a magical sense of adventure, distance, pirates, sunshine, sea, beautiful scenery and much more. It is truly a magical word.
Let’s be clear, I did not come from a very fortunate background, and a trip to Cornwall, well, did not seem to be a possibility. So quite frankly it was a distant dream and may as well as been as far away as America, in terms of my perceived expectations and hopes of visiting. Strange how, as a child, something may seem to be an impossibility, to only discover, as an adult with a car, that impossibility disintegrates every inch of the open road that leads you towards Cornwall and the many beautifully scenic locations.
So what did we do when we had an opportunity to think about buying a holiday cottage to be used personally, and of course as a holiday let? Well, the first thing I could think about was to visit Cornwall, as for some reason, the final chosen location would have the words Cornwall in it! I knew in my mind and heart that was going to be the case, so no point wasting time looking in other counties. It was time to just get down to it.
I had seen over the Internet a cottage that looked delicious, and for reasons unknown to me, this just kept coming round for my attention quite frequently. Well, not being superstitious or anything, I just decided to go and have a physical look and indeed found a wonderful set of cottages in a location outside Launceston called Tremeale Barn. Within the site were 8 delightful cottages, and of course, I was in the business of looking for a dream cottage.
Long story short, I ended up dealing on all eight beautiful Cornish cottages, crazy I know, but Cornwall is such a gorgeous location, plus the grounds and scenery were fabulous, not to mention the swimming pool on site. This was a big move, taking over so many holiday cottages and the prospect of maintaining a pool, whilst my base was in London! Not for the faint hearted.
So now, we own most of Tremeale Barn which is right on the borders of Cornwall and Devon, providing a fantastic launch pad for all of Cornwall and Devon, including short journeys to some of the best beaches in the country. This was a big move, taking over so many holiday cottages and the prospect of maintaining a pool, whilst my base was in London! Not for the faint hearted.
So now, we own most of Tremeale Barn which is right on the borders of Cornwall and Devon, providing a fantastic launch pad for all of Cornwall and Devon, including short journeys to some of the best beaches in the country. Visit us some day, you can find us on the Cornwall Sunshine website and if you don’t stay in one of our cottages, you should stay in Cornwall, and perhaps you and your children will also discover the magic that lies in the word 'Cornwall'.
