Bodmin Parish Church

Bodmin Parish Church dates back to 1469, where some of the building was built from masonry of the Norman period. This is the largest parish church in Cornwall and is renowned for its association with St Petroc, whose relics have been on site for many centuries.

This church was dedicated to St Petroc before the 1066 Norman Conquest. There now lays the chapel of St Mary, where the shrine of St Petroc is located.

In 1110, French canons visit to Cornwall resulted in violent protests as one of the canons derided the idea that King Arthur was still alive and that he would not return to lead his people. This was greeted with uproar as many at the time believed that King Arthur was alive and well and would indeed show himself as King of England once again.

‘Cornish Perpendicular’ pillars were typical of Cornish churches and Bodmin parish church, is one of the few churches that have building records intact and almost complete, surviving for centuries; records going back to 1491.

Therefore the monastery would have been established, identifying the beginning of Bodmin the town.
